Black Cake Recruitment Day - start of article

Black Cake Recruitment Day

In June, we were delighted to hold a recruitment event in the Grangetown Hub for the exciting High-End TV production `Black Cake’, alongside our colleagues from Sgil Cymru and Culture Connect. Based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson, the production is being filmed in Cardiff in Great Point Seren Studios for 6 months.

We welcomed over 100 residents of Grangetown to the Grangetown Community Hub (thanks to the very kind Naima, who allowed us to use the space) to meet and greet the Heads of Department on this exciting project. The attendees got the rare opportunity to talk to the Costume Dept, Art Dept, Production Office, Lighting, Camera, Sound as well as the Producer.

We were joined by Culture Connect...
...as well as Sgil Cymru!

This day has now led to several people from the event being recruited onto the production in Costume, the Production Office, the Art Dept, Accounts, Make up, Camera and the Video Department.

Nick Goding, the Producer behind `Black Cake’ shares our ethos of opening up the industry to those who may not have known about the opportunities available to them and so we were delighted to work with him on this:

“Screen Alliance Wales were the first visitors to my office! Only a matter of weeks later we were all at the Grangetown Hub reaching out to people from the area who previously considered the film industry beyond their reach. Now we have 22 trainees of all nations mixing and learning from the cream of the Welsh film world on a project which embraces change. What could be better than that?”

Rob Thomas, Producer's Assistant, who was also present on the recruitment day added, “Hosting events like this in partnership with SAW has resulted in us employing 22 trainees from various walks of life. Our Welsh Government funded scheme aims to give our trainees the start they need to forge a career in the exciting world of TV production."

Our stand at the event
It was so great to see so many people attend the event

At SAW, we are over the moon that those people who attended have now had their first start in the industry, that perhaps they may not have had before, and have started on the path to what is, hopefully, a long and successful career. We wish them all the luck in the world!

We hope to hold similar events in the future, so do make sure to keep up to date with us on our website and across our social media channels.
